The Rome Free Academy boys soccer team opened its season Friday with a 2-1 double overtime win at Clinton in non-league action. Lucas Yanik had the winner for the Black Knights
RFA led 1-0 at the half on a goal by Collin Gannon. Gavin Civitelli assisted on the score.
Clinton tied the game at 1-1 in the second half on a goal by Andres Quintana.
Early in the second overtime, Gannon broke free down the left side and played a ball across the goal. Yanik made a weak side run and finished the cross for the game winner.
Aidan Goodwin made two saves in net for RFA to earn the win.
Owen Saunders stopped six shots for Clinton.
RFA’s next game is its home opener at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday against Whitesboro in the Tri-Valley League.
Clinton hosts Camden at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in a non-league contest.
VVS blanks Oxford
The VVS boys soccer team beat host Oxford 3-0 Friday in their own tournament to advance to the championship game.
The Red Devils got goals from Jacob Garcia, Ryan Mumford and Lincoln Pelc. Cole Maguire added an assist.
The championship game is today, though the time and opponent were not available at press time.
Oneida falls in tourney play
The Oneida boys soccer team lost 7-0 to the hosts in the Chittenango Varsity Boys Soccer Kickoff Tournament Thursday.
Oneida goalkeeper Kaiden Cannistra made 14 saves in net.
Oneida travels to New Hartford at 6 p.m. Tuesday to open its TVL schedule.
Clinton advance to title game
Clinton advanced to Huntington Classic championship game in Baldwinsville with a 4-3 win over New Hartford Friday.
Clinton’s four goals all came from freshmen. Lauren Rey led the way for the Warriors with two goals and two assists. Also scoring for Clinton were Gracen Grimm and Gabriella Gemelli.
Sydney Labayewski stopped 11 in goal for Clinton for the win.
Clinton were scheduled to take on the host Baldwinsville in the championship game at 11 this morning.
VVS girls get rivalry win
The VVS girls soccer team scored a 4-1 victory over Tri-Valley League rival Oneida on Thursday in the Chittenango Kickoff Tournament.
Julia Carter scored two goals and both Laiken Kiser and Brianna Burnett each added a goal for the Red Devils.
Sierra Kinne picked up an assist.
In goal, Grace Maranville made six saves for 2-0 VVS.
No stats were provided for Oneida.
VVS is back in action on Tuesday when they host Proctor High of Utica at 6:30. The Indians are back on the field also on Tuesday when they host TVL opponent New Hartford at 4:15.
Bees shut out Warriors
The Baldwinsville girls soccer team shut out Whitesboro 1-0 Friday in non-league action.
Emma Warren scored the game’s lone goal on an assist from Allison Starr.
Nora Vick made six saves in goal for Whitesboro.
The Warriors travel to Central Valley Academy for a TVL game at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Camden wins second match
In a TVL tennis match, visiting Camden defeated host Notre Dame, 6-1, Friday.
Winning in singles action for the Blue Devils was McKenzie Allard and Lainie Liberatore.
The teams of Brianna O’Drain and Morgan Keil, Adeline Houser and Gabe Castelluzzo, Alex Corcoran and Aubrey Corcoran and Maggie Plumley and Chelsea Coady all won their doubles matches over the Jugglers.
Camden is 2-0 on the season and takes the court again on Wednesday when they travel to Oneida for a 3:30 start.
NH gets tennis win over VVS
The New Hartford girls tennis team topped visiting Vernon-Verona-Sherrill 7-0 in the Spartans’ season opener Friday.
The singles winners for the Spartans in the TVL match were Grace LaFountain, Sophia Farkouh and Lillian Goodemote. The winning doubles pairs were Sophia Burynski and Nina Paciello, Victoria Cioni and Danielle DeRocco, Anna Nigro and Katie Pine and Anna Curry and Julia Battaglia.
New Hartford hosts Rome Free Academy at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday in a TVL matchup.
VVS hosts Utica Notre Dame at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, also a TVL matchup.
Westmo tops HP in tennis
The Westmoreland girls tennis team beat host Holland Patent 4-1 in a Center State Conference matchup Friday.
Autumn Millington and Kiersten Tynatishon got singles wins for the Bulldogs.
Lily Mazur and Jenna Tyczynski won in doubles for Westmoreland, and the team took a forfeit win as well.
Westmoreland hosts Canastota at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the league.
HP hosts Sauquoit Valley at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the league.
