Whilst Covid-19 has affected travel around the world, it isn’t the only issue at hand when it comes to deciding where US travelers should and shouldn’t travel to. The US Department of State has been working hard to keep its travel advisory page updated in order to keep its travelers safe and informed, recently issuing 13 updates at the Level 3 advisory warning level on March 1st. Here’s a look at what those updates entail.
Level 3 Travel Advisory Updates
Antigua and Barbuda
According to the advisory page, travelers should reconsider travel to Antigua and Barbuda due to health and safety measures and COVID-related conditions, with some areas in the country more affected than others. Whilst stay at home orders have been lifted and business and transport options have resumed, Barbuda still suffers infrastructure problems following a hurricane.
Benin
Those planning to visit Benin are advised to reconsider travel due to Covid-19. Most transport options have resumed, as have business operations. However, there are regional warnings for Benin; travelers are advised to avoid Park Pendjari, Park W and adjacent hunting zones, and other areas near Benin’s northern border with Burkina Faso, due to terrorism and kidnapping, and to exercise caution in urban areas due to crime.
Bermuda
Travel to Bermuda is to be reconsidered due to Covid-19, and the country has also been handed a Level 3 Travel Health Notice by the CDC for its Covid-19 situation. Most business and transport operation in the country have resumed.
Burundi
Travel to Burundi is to be reconsidered due to Covid-19, crime, health and political violence in the country. Whilst travel and business operations have resumed, the page warns that grenade attacks and armed robbery occurs frequently and that there are political tensions, leading to violence and restrictions to movement. There are also warning about the country’s substandard police force and medical services.
Eritrea
Eritrea’s page warns that travel should be reconsidered due to Covid-19, travel restrictions, limited consular assistance and landmines. The country has stay at home orders in place, and law officials routinely block access to foreign nationals in detention, which means the embassy may be unaware if travelers are arrested. Landmines are also present in many of the remote areas of the country.
Mauritania
Mauritania should not be visited due to Covid-19, as well as crime and terrorism in the country. According to the page, violent crimes are common and terrorists may strike without warning, targeting places frequented by Westerners.
Montserrat
Travel to Montserrat is discouraged due to health and safety measures and COVID-related conditions in the country.
Morocco
Travel to Morocco should be reconsidered due to Covid-19, whilst travelers should exercise extreme caution due to terrorism. Stay at home orders have been lifted and some business operations have resumed. According to the page, terrorist groups are plotting potential attacks in the country, and target crowded places that may be popular with travelers.
Namibia
Travel to Namibia should be avoided due to Covid-19. Most business and travel operations have resumed in the country.
Oman
Travel to Oman should be reconsidered due to Covid-19, with the country being handed a Level 4 Travel Health Notice by the CDC for the current Covid-19 situation in the country. The page also explicitly warns travelers not to travel to the Yemen border due to terrorism and armed conflict.
Sudan
Travelers should reconsider travel to Sudan due to COVID-19, crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, and armed conflict. The page warns of crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, home invasion, and carjacking. It also warns that terrorism and demonstrations are threats to travelers, and that there are conflicts along the border with Chad and South Sudan.
Thailand
Not long ago rated a Level 1 country, Thailand has received a Level 3 advisory due to Covid-19. The page also warns of travel to the southern border provinces of Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, and Songkhla due to civil unrest.
