Tyler Dalzell Leads Boxers in Season Opener

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – The 2021-22 Air Force boxing season got underway this evening (Aug. 27), as 18 returning members of the squad stepped into the ring for a hard-hitting round of Friday Night Fights – the first of five such intrasquad competitions to be held in the Cadet Boxing Room this year.

Junior Tyler Dalzell captured the season’s first Boxer of the Week award, after he forced the referee to stop his 150-pound bout with sophomore Michael Chaffin in the third round.

Dalzell collected the only early victory of the night, as the remaining eight bouts all went to the judges for decision. Sophomore Josh Payton claimed the 146-pound title over junior Garrett Kim, while members of the senior class accounted for five straight-decision victories. Lawrence Barrett claimed a win over sophomore Noah Lewis at 133 pounds, while Zach Phillips earned the judges’ vote in a 147-pound decision over classmate Maksat Omar. Alan Manzo and Ayaz Mustafa earned victories over a pair of junior teammates, as Manzo decisioned Nicolas Nakaoka at 160 pounds and Mustafa picked up a win over Jeramiah Birdsong at 162 pounds. In the only women’s bout of the night, senior Sam Thompson claimed a 152-pound decision over sophomore Mack Lucas.

Junior Jordan Dutcher and sophomore Keillan Laurenceau rounded out the night’s list of winners with split-decision victories, as Dutcher defeated senior Don Angelo Piasecki at 137 pounds and Laurenceau earned the win over junior Syd Reyes at 169 pounds.

The Falcons return to action on Friday, Sept. 10, when they travel to Annapolis, Md., for the annual showdown with their service academy counterparts from Navy.
