CANANDAIGUA, NY — The Lake House on Canandaigua received top marks from Travel + Leisure magazine’s 10 Best Resort Hotels in New York State Wednesday.

According to a release from the hotel, the resort placed first in the 10 best hotels in New York, and received additional high marks in the magazine’s other notable lists.

The resort also placed second in the Top 15 Resort Hotels in the Continental U.S. and 30th in the magazine’s Top 100 Hotels in the World.

Each ranking came from the magazine’s World’s Best Awards for 2021, with the winners being determined by reader’s opinions on hotels and resorts. Voters rated hotels on their facilities, location, service, food and overall value.

This isn’t the first time the resort has been honored by Travel + Leisure.

The Lake House on Canandaigua, as pictured in this rendering, receives the Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce's Environmental Champion of the Year Award.

The hotel was also featured in the magazine’s 2021 “It List” from earlier this year, an honor General Manager Simon Dewar referred to as being similar to the motion picture industry’s Academy Awards.

“It’s been an incredibly difficult year across the hospitality industry,” Dewar said, referring to the hotel’s placement on the It List, adding that it was “time for some good news.”

“It’s been a challenging time for all of us, not only from the pandemic itself but from the restrictions on travel during this pandemic,” he said, adding that the Lake House appearing on the list meant “we’re just over the moon. It’s incredible.”

The Lake House, on the former site of the Inn on the Lake, was developed by the Sands family and includes a 125-guest hotel, timber-frame barn, dock and other amenities.

The hotel also contains the Rose Tavern, a restaurant which offers a unique seasonal menu along with specialty drinks.

2020 was a very tough year for all industries — a large number of stores had to shut their doors and revert to a solely online business model, restaurants could only work under a takeout or delivery method, theme parks were closed, and the cruise industry came to a screeching halt. While their businesses had to change, and change drastically, that did not stop companies from working as hard as they could to keep their loyal patrons happy.

Disney is just one of the companies that had to figure out new business models to adapt to a new world. And while the theme parks were finally able to reopen, the Disney Cruise Line has struggled more. Up until the last couple of months, Disney was continuing to cancel cruises because sailing with the pandemic still raging was not deemed safe.

Even though Disney was unable to sail for most of 2020 and for months in 2021, that did not stop people from thinking it was a top cruise line — in fact, they think it is the top cruise line. Travel + Leisure Magazine has named Disney Cruise Line the top cruise line in the world for the third year in a row.

Disney Parks Blog shared the exciting news with readers:

Travel + Leisure recognizes the top hotels, islands, cities, cruise lines, airlines, spas, and more around the globe, based on the results of the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2021 readers’ survey. Readers rated cruise ships by the quality of their service, staterooms, food, entertainment, itineraries and shore excursions.

It’s an honor to be considered among the best of the best. We celebrate this award with you, our guests and all of our cast and crew members who create magical vacations at sea! As our president, Thomas Mazloum shared, “I know just how much hard work goes into earning these accolades, and I couldn’t be prouder of our cast and crew members.”

According to Travel + Leisure, Disney ranked at the top because of the incredible experiences that you just can’t find on other cruise ships. According to an article talking about the award, Travel + Leisure said:

While there are plenty of great mega-ship ocean cruise lines, Disney Cruise Line offers experiences guests just can’t find anywhere else. A vacation on one of its ships is just as much about all the enchanting action you’ll find on board as it is about the destinations you’ll visit. From excursions to Castaway Cay — Disney’s beloved private island — to Star Wars and Marvel-themed days at sea, to character experiences, there’s nothing like a Disney cruise.

While Disney is already at the top of the cruise line game, it is about to get even better. Beginning in May 2022, Disney will launch its newest cruise ship, the Disney Wish. The Disney Wish will have Disney’s first “attraction at sea” —

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Kelly Hovland has been named head coach of the University of Maryland women’s golf team by Athletic Director Damon Evans after the conclusion of a nationwide search for the top position.

“We are thrilled to hire Kelly as the new head coach of our women’s golf program at Maryland,” said Athletic Director Damon Evans. “Kelly has been a vital part of the most successful season in Maryland women’s golf history. We are excited for her to lead the program and build on the momentum of last season’s NCAA Championship appearance and Top-20 ranking. She has a wealth of experience in the state of Maryland and we look forward to her continuing her success leading the Terrapins.”

Hovland served as an assistant coach at Maryland for two seasons (2019-21) before being tapped to serve as interim head coach in June 2021, after Diana Cantú’s departure to her alma mater Tennessee as the new women’s head coach.

While serving as an assistant coach, she helped coach the Terrapins to back-to-back record-setting seasons. Under Hovland’s guidance, Maryland improved its national ranking from 43rd to 14th (school record) over two seasons and improved its scoring average to 294.65 in 2021 (school record).

“I’m excited and humbled to be named the next head women’s golf coach at the University of Maryland,” said Hovland. “Thank you to Damon Evans, Colleen Sorem, Libby Ellis, and the entire leadership team for their support and belief in my vision for the future of this program. I look forward to building on the foundation of success established by Diana Cantú and leading our team to a championship. This is an exciting time to be a Terp and I’m so proud to be part of the history and tradition of Maryland Athletics.”

Maryland’s accomplishments under Hovland include helping coach the Terps to an NCAA regional and first NCAA Championship appearance, seven top-three finishes during the 2020-21 season, a team win at the Hurricane Invitational, and multiple individual performance and academic honors.

Additionally, she played a vital role in developing and executing the player development strategy, individual and team practices, travel and played an active role in recruiting some of Maryland’s top student-athletes.

Before Maryland, Hovland was the associate head coach at the U.S. Naval Academy for seven seasons (2012-19), where she played a critical role in the formation of the women’s program. She helped lead the team to its first Patriot League team title in 2017 and back-to-back runner-up finishes in the two seasons prior.

Hovland is a Class-A member of both the PGA of America (PGA) and Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA). She was also an assistant and teaching professional at the United States Naval Academy Golf Club, providing lessons to members, the public, and Midshipmen during her stint at Navy.

Hovland played four years of Division I collegiate golf at Southern Illinois, where the Sparta, Ill. native won the 2004 Missouri Valley Conference individual title and

For Alford, a nominee For Mr. Baseball for Alabama, he set school records in runs (62), home runs (14) and hits (64) during the 2021 season. He batted .464 with 49 RBIs and hit 17 doubles. He’s been approached by numerous professional scouts about his talents as third baseman and his hitting. He was selected as a Rawlings Sporting Goods Perfect Game All-American.

Rolfe has been an outstanding pitcher for the Lady Patriots since she was a freshman and helped Bob Jones to be ranked among the top teams in the nation during the 2021 season. She began playing softball at age four when she used a plastic bat in a small field new her home in Anniston. At one time as a recreational league player, she was the worst player on the team, but began developing quickly by age nine. Once joining a travel team at age 10 she began to blossom into a riveting pitcher and was chosen All-State as a pitcher when she played for Class 5A Alexandria in the seventh grade and a year later was selected All-State as a first baseman.

At Madison Academy, Clark had an enormous season for the Mustangs batting .627, with 47 hits, 10 doubles, five triples, 17 home runs with 54 RBI’s. She scored 58 runs and had 21 stolen bases. Her extraordinary talents as a sophomore have college recruiters waiting to approach her about her future in softball.

For the second straight year, former Sewickley Academy golfer Jason Li has been recognized as one of the top golfers in NCAA Division III competition.

At the end of May, the Carnegie Mellon senior was named a finalist for the NCAA Division III Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

The Nicklaus Award, which Li also was nominated for last year, recognizes the top players at the Division I, II, III, NAIA and NJCAA levels.

“It’s pretty cool, but I think it just kind of speaks to how consistently I’ve been able to play the last two years,” Li said. “I’ve just been continuing to work on my game and getting better. It’s pretty cool to repeat as a finalist, but I’ve just been playing good, and it’s kind of nice to just have that validated in a sense with the award.”

Li is named a finalist alongside Methodist’s Andre Chi, Webster’s Will Hocker, Guilford’s James Mishoe and Illinois Wesleyan’s Rob Wuethrich, who won the award in 2020. Although Li would like to win the award, he believes it’s literally a toss-up between himself and the other four finalists.

“Looking at everyone who’s been named a finalist, everyone kind of has their own reason to be given in the award, it could really go to any of the five,” Li said. “It would be nice to win, but I understand there’s a reason they don’t give it to everyone. It just really depends on the committee making the decision and what they value.”

As a junior last year, Li was named the UAA Player of the Year and a Jack Nicklaus Award finalist after averaging a score of 70.9 in 14 rounds of play. He also carded a school-record low round of 66 in the Golfweek Fall Invitational and the Savannah Invitational.

During the Savannah Invitational, he also set a school record for the lowest three-round score of 204. He went on to record three top 10 finishes and one top-three finish.

Li’s senior year as a Tartan was much of the same. The former Panther helped lead CMU to a fourth-place team finish at the 2021 NCAA championships, which is the best finish in program history.

“I think for the program itself and all the competitors, it was, ‘We’re the real deal now,’” Li said. “We proved it this year and the program is, I think, just getting started. I think we’ll see the team at the top of more leaderboards and national championships in the future too. So, I’m super excited for them.”

The four-time University Athletic Association all-conference team member also had a pretty successful individual season.

He finished with a team-best average of 72.1 over 14 rounds and shot even-par or lower in half of those rounds.

Li also claimed three top-three finishes and earned his first collegiate individual honors when he carded a 2-under-par 214 at the 54-hole Golfweek Spring Invitational during the first weekend of April

The timeshare firm will rebrand as Travel + Leisure, and I guess it’s hoping that purchasing the media firm will broaden its potential consumer base.
