Signature Programs : University of Dayton, Ohio

While UD offers many ways for students to have an off-campus international or intercultural learning experience, two unique programs are Semester Abroad and Intercultural Leadership (SAIL) and the Global learning Academy (GLA).

Semester Abroad and Intercultural Leadership (SAIL)

The Semester Abroad and Intercultural Leadership Program (SAIL) is a year-long education abroad and leadership development program. This innovative program entails a fall semester abroad at one of the three current study abroad sites in Ireland, Spain or Ghana, paired with participation in an intercultural leadership program which includes special housing during the spring semester.

SAIL is a no-additional cost program, meaning you pay the same amount for your fall semester abroad as you would for a semester at UD (includes UD tuition and housing).  Most financial aid packages apply.

In addition, students will be awarded the following benefits:

  • Airfare cost covered by University of Dayton.
  • Housing arranged by UD
  • Location specific additions which may include: Airport pick up, transportation cards, welcome meals, etc. Details will be shared with students based on program of choice.
  • Access to guaranteed Special Interest Housing at UD upon their return in the Spring.
    • Juniors and Seniors: Houses in the Neighborhood
    • Sophomores: Caldwell Apartments in the Global Learning Living Community
  • A one-credit course designed to support students before, during, and after their experience abroad.

Global Learning Academy (GLA)

The Global Learning Academy is an innovative global and intercultural learning program that combines online courses with a two-week theme-based field experience at key international, US and local/virtual locations. It is a summer program.

Key Benefits

  • Interdisciplinary exploration of critical global themes
  • High impact Global and Intercultural Learning Experience
  • Integration with academic programs and structures
  • Earn credits toward the degree (CAP and major/minor)
  • Flexibility to select courses and sites of interest
  • Accommodates students’ schedules and personal

situations with travel and no travel options

How it Works

Students select:

  • a global theme
  • 1-2 online courses (3 to 6 credits) out of those offered specifically for the Academy
  • a field study site and a back-up site

Themes are designed to be interdisciplinary in nature and often address a critical global issue. Example themes include Racial Equity and Social Justice, Human Rights, Global Health, Sustainability, and Marianist Leadership.
