District 8-1A
Led by junior Ryan Powell, the Master’s Academy boys tennis team nipped St. Edward’s for the team championship by a single point at Riverside Park in Vero Beach.
Powell clinched a berth as an individual to the state tournament after defeating St. Edward’s Jake Damiani in straight sets at No. 1 singles which proved to be vital for the Patriots earning the title.
For the Pirates, at No. 1 doubles Damiani and Justin Hall were able to defeat the Patriots’ doubles duo of Powell and Jason Flaming in straight sets to earn their spot at the state tournament.
Master’s Academy will host Holy Trinity on Tuesday, Apr. 19 while St. Edward’s will travel north to play West Shore in a regional quarterfinal.
Benjamin’s Ryan Wuhrland won at No. 1 singles and teamed with Jane Boyland to bring home the title at No. 1 doubles to lead the Bucs to the team title for the girls.
St. Edward’s grabbed the runner-up spot, getting a victory from sophomore Caroline Zoltak at No. 5 singles and the Pirates will travel to play Edgewood also on Apr. 19.
District 8-3A
Martin County’s boys and Okeechobee’s girls repeated as district champions at the Okeechobee Sports Complex.
Each school had their No. 1 singles bring home a victory and secure their spot at the state tournament as Dylan deWindt for the Tigers and Bellana Schlosser for the Brahmans will automatically compete as individuals.
The two also will be in the field for the doubles competition at state as deWindt teamed with his brother Jaden to earn a hard-fought victory at No. 1 doubles. Rallying from dropping the first set, the DeWindt’s won the second set 6-1 and claimed the tiebreaker 10-4.
Schlosser and Isabella Derigo were victorious at No. 1 doubles for Okeechobee, who will host the regional quarterfinal on Tuesday, Apr. 19.
Martin County’s girls finished as the runner-up and will go on the road to begin the state playoffs.
For Martin County’s boys, Jaden deWindt at No. 2 singles, Jensen Richards at No. 4 singles and Luke Schmelzenbah at No. 5 singles won their bracket and Richards teamed with Adam Lehachi to win at No. 2 doubles.
The Tiger boys will host a regional quarterfinal also on Apr. 19 while Okeechobee will go on the road after finishing as the runner-up.
Softball
Lincoln Park Academy 12, Okeechobee 4: Madison Davis struck out 16 and didn’t allow an earned run and went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI to lead the way for the Greyhounds (4-6). Callan Kloeckner went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI, Justice Monds had a double and two RBI and Kaitlyn Ward went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Lincoln Park.
Jensen Beach 19, Fort Pierce Central 8 (6 innings): A nine-run first inning propelled the Falcons (5-8), who were led by a 5-for-5, six-RBI day from Mallory Wheeler. Wheeler struck out 10 in a complete game, Shawna McNair went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI, Kylie Antoon had two hits and an RBI and Shanna McNair along with Annalise Buncy both had two hits for Jensen Beach.
Olivia Black had an inside-the-park home run in the loss for Fort Pierce Central.
Martin County 16, Port St. Lucie 1 (3 innings): Bayli Legg went 3-for-4 with three RBI and Brooke Vega had two hits and three RBI to lead the Tigers (6-6) to the victory.
John Carroll Catholic 15, Glades Day 3 (5 innings): Kaley Brancaccio had two hits and three RBI and Mikale Lemons went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI to lead the way for the Rams (11-5). Isabella Ramirez went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI and Sophia Loreto struck out seven in a complete game effort for John Carroll.
Flag Football
Fort Pierce Central 24, John Carroll Catholic 0: Alyssa Llanos caught seven passes for 19 yards and two touchdowns and added two interceptions on defense to lead the way for the Cobras (9-3). Adrienne Rivera went 11-for-13 throwing for 138 yards and two touchdowns and added 35 rushing yards with a touchdown, Alexxa Perez threw for 133 yards and a touchdown and Whitney D’Haiti had a touchdown catch and an interception on defense for Fort Pierce Central.
Baseball
John Carroll Catholic 10, Calvary Christian 3: Armani Newton went 3-for-5 with two triples and a double and drove in two runs as the Rams (11-9) used an eight-run fifth inning to push them to their fifth win in a row. Kevin Smith had two hits, stole four bases and drove in three runs, Jake Rychter had a double and three RBI and Cooper Grimes earned the win, tossing four scoreless innings of relief for John Carroll.
