Many individuals view traveling along the entire Pan-American highway as the ultimate adventure. They may take a year to do the entire trip. Here are a few tips if you are going to plan this ultimate adventure.
The first thing you want to consider is the vehicle that you will use for the trip. You want something that is going to be reliable and that will not require you to stop at multiple mechanics for repairs. Invest some time and money in making sure the vehicle is as sound as possible. Make sure that you have a spare tire or two, a quality jack, jumper cables, and other tools. Take time to do research to find out where you can get basic maintenance done on the road. For example, if you are starting your trip in the northern part of the United States, you can see if there is an oil change franchise right before you cross over the Mexican border. You will not likely need another oil change until you get through most of Central America. Planning little things like this will make your trip go smoothly.
Set some priorities on things that you would like to see along the way. Make sure that there is plenty of time for you to be able to see those places. Be reasonable with the amount of time you have set aside for travel. You do not want to rush through the trip. You want to be able to go off the beaten path every now and then if it is possible.
Being flexible is extremely important. For example, a person may find that the beaches in Mexico are not what they expected and are full of tourists. So they do not spend as much time there as they thought. However, when they arrive to the beaches in El Salvador, they discover amazing surf locations and beautiful beaches with almost no tourists. Having a flexible schedule will allow them to enjoy fun things they find along the way. Planning more time than is necessary to do things is always better than having a rigid schedule.
